Global animal activists are calling to outlaw the annual slaughter of more than 10,000 dogs at the YuLin Dog Meat Festival.
Located in the Guanxi Province, dogs are expected to be traded, unethically killed and eaten from the 21st of June.
A change.org petition titled ‘STOP THE YULIN DOG MEAT EATING FESTIVAL‘ has almost 1,415,000 supporting signatures.
The viral petition was created by Canadian non profited organisation Raise UR Paw.
American actor and director Ian Somerhalder has retweeted the petition to more than 5.9 million followers.
Celebrity activist Ricky Gervais has also taken to Twitter to highlight the reality of the barbaric festival.
The hashtag #stopyulin2015 is trending on Twitter and Instagram as users continue to spread awareness and support of the petition.
